Connecticut and Rhode Island are probably the two smallest New England states in terms of size. From Vermont driving South to Connecticut is about a good 4 hours drive and we covered it in a day. We spent an afternoon at the Hartford downtown and because it was on a Sunday, there isn't a whole lot of activities going on when we visited.
Few blocks from the Connecticut State Capitol is the Bushnell Park, considered to be the oldest park in the United States. There you will find the famous Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch and within the park compound, there's a carousel ride for $1 per person. Adult riding with small kids must pay for a ticket, which is unusual as in a normal case, adult rides free with a paying kid. Daddy thinks it is because this particular carousel go much faster than the normal one, and they afraid adult is going to keep riding it for the thrill for free :)
Mystic, CT
From the State Capitol, we visited a small village of Mystic, CT. which is about an hour away. There are few attractions including the Mystic seaport, Mystic aquarium and the Mystic River Bascule Bridge. Also note that the Mayflower II tall ship is also under reconstruction at Mystic seaport until 2019.
Rhode Island
The Capitol building is open for tour during normal business hours and it offers both guided and self-guided tour. You can check out their schedule here. It was nice to cool off from the hot summer heat with beautiful structures to observe.
Not far away from the state capital building is a nice little Roger Williams National Memorial Park.
Be sure to stop by the Providence Visitor Information Center at the park. They have great information of landmarks that you could visit and stop by for bathroom break.
One of the most photographed place in Rhode Island, the Roger Williams statue overlooking the Providence skyline. We hiked from the Memorial Park up to the hill and over the cliff! It was a great experience as we were literally hiking up and down the hill. If you want an easy route, you could drive directly up the hill to the statue.
It is more spectacular for evening photo shoot as the sun is on the opposite side shining toward the front of the statue.
We ate our lunch at East Side Pocket. They got some delicious falafel, kafta kabob and gyro! Happy faces after good food.
