We were on our last trip of the year 2021! We planned to
ski and visit a few parks in New Mexico. Instead of the normal route through Interstate-10 via Fort Stockton, we opted a different route through Highway 87 via Big Spring. Reason because we have not driven on this route and have not been in Big Spring. Something new. It turned out that Big Spring is a hidden gem especially during Christmas!
We stopped at West Oak Hill, Austin for lunch at Thai Taste restaurant. The food was pretty good and priced reasonably.
After lunch, we continued our drive to Big Spring. We tried to find things to do there and found a park called Comanche Trail Park. There is an amphitheater and a big playground for kids. There wasn't any show as the amphitheater was closed on Christmas eve. The kids played at the playgrounds for a while until dark.
When exploring the park, we discovered it was also decorated with Christmas lights. It appears that the decorations were donated by communities or/and sponsored by businesses. We thought that is brilliant to attract tourists to the city and benefit the locals. The viewing was drive by and free of charge, and the decoration was quite good.
While we were searching for the Christmas light entrance to the park, we stumbled upon a nearby neighborhood and saw some jaw dropping Christmas decorations. Below are some of the pictures taken around Belvedere Rd, Chevy Chase and Avondale Dr. There probably were more decorations we didn't know around the neighborhood.
These pictures don't do it justice to the Christmas decoration. The was even a place that the property owner opened up the gate to let visitors drove around their property to enjoy their decoration. That was the most surreal Christmas decoration we have seen! The entire area (grass, tree, house, etc) were covered with Christmas lightning and music!
It appears that Big Spring also have an annual Christmas parade. Anyway, after that we ate Hibachi Shrimp for dinner at Hibachi Express. Then we went to Best Western for the night.
Big Spring, what an amazing hidden gem especially during Christmas!
