Spring break ended with a road trip to Beaumont and Lake Charles. Both cities are small so there isn't a whole lot to do. We managed to find few places to visit in our 2 days 1 night trip.
We skipped the Beaumont Gator Country we visited last year and went straight to Fire Museum of Texas. It houses one of the world's largest working fire hydrant and is located at a historic landmark of Beaumont, Texas. The museum is free to visit and only opens on weekdays; hence, we were only able to see the outside structures. The fire hydrant is uniquely painted in dalmatian along with several small hydrants within the areas
After the museum visit, we were looking for a park to have our prepacked picnic lunch and found a Riverfront Park situated along the Neches River; not too far from the Fire Museum. It is a nice little park with train passing from time to time. We have little fans of the train tracks so they were happy to walk on some of the tracks on our way to the park.
Within few walking distance, Texas Energy Museum is just around the corner. Unfortunately, they don't seem to welcome little fellas as touching is not allowed in the museum. As soon as we were greeted by the front desk lady, she politely and frankly told us that she does not want us to be disappointed. Of course, she gave us an alternate destination, the Children's Museum, which we passed.
Now, it is time for the boy's nap so here we come, Lake Charles.
First stop, L'Auberge Casino & Resort. Unlike most of Las Vegas casinos, you do need to be 21 years of age to be on the casino floor. So, we just did our normal walk through and on the back of L'Auberge building, there is a walkway straight to the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino. Not much things to do as we were not guests of the hotel. So, we did our favorite thing, monkey around with bananas.
Next, we checked in to our hotel, Holiday Inn Express (with IHG 15,000 points) that is 10 minutes away, went to the pool for our own water splashing competition and head out to dinner.
Cajun food is a must in Louisiana and so we ended up at Steamboat Bill's for some delicious seafood. May I warn you this place is packed! We got there 10 minutes before 6 and the restaurant was full house. There were two lines and we got lucky to be on the much shorter line.
We were stuffed with crawfish, boudin ball, pistolette, gumbo and chicken strips.
Go visit the Millennium Park of Lake Charles. This park has one amazing children's playground with a huge maze-like treehouse that my children like.
Next to the children playground is the lake front. We spent the evening walking, goofing around and enjoying the beautiful sunset.
Gator Pond, we only spotted a very small alligator so daddy said, it is more like a turtle pond.
Prien Lake Park may have a better view at night as it is equipped with light bulb along the wooden bridge. We went during the daytime, the heat was too much for us to handle. Right before we headed home, we had our lunch at Pat's of Henderson restaurant which turned out, in our opinion, has better gumbo than popular one mentioned above.
